So, feedback this week?

How did y'all feel about this past Sunday's worship time? Any thoughts on the set, the flow, the execution of the music, the communion-seating arrangement?

I'd like to hear your thoughts.

personally, i've felt that we've had better days. not quite sure what it was, but it felt different. my mind must've been somewhere else that day. i don't know what happened, but for me it was pretty weird.

i don't think the seating was conducive to me worshipping... i was uncomfortable for some reason.

as for the music, i'll agree with nate that you guys had better days.

i didn't know 3 of the 4 songs so i'm sure that had something to do with it.

not to be negative or anything, sorry! its just that the combination of me not knowing the songs and being uncomfortable probably was lethal.

but i really do love you guys leading worship :) and THATs the truth

I liked the new seating, if only because it was different and a change of pace. Sometimes, I think that is all it takes to get people out of the weekly "grind" of church.

I've often thought that if we outgrow Elton's house for Sunday service, but we don't want to set up all the equipment every week, we could always meet around tables at LPT. It would take 15 minutes to set up the tables and chairs, and we could probably fit 20 to 30 people and still make it comfortable and inviting.

As for the songs, as much as I like Jars of Clay, it might have been a difficult song to sing. I could be wrong, though, because I wasn't singing. Other than that, I think worship was fine. Since Haven tries to collect a variety of people, I've realized that they will all worship in their own separate ways. What we can do is provide a starting point, and let them go in whatever direction they choose.

Probably the thing that could enhance worship at Haven the most would be an electric djimbe.

oh yeah, and we need to fix that wireless. it's too distracting... for me anyways. the hissing when it's working, and no sound when it doesn't, and the combination of the two brought me to not hearing a word elton said.

test it beforehand, make sure there are ALWAYS fresh batteries in it. especially, if that'll remedy the problem. sure, we'll have a lot of batteries at 90%, but think of it like this, one battery per month, so 12 batteries a year. that's like one pack or so, which costs what? less than $10? we need to stop being so asian!

change of pace = always good.

my issue was that i just didn't feel comfortable not with a table in front of me, not alot of space to the sides, and directly facing someone.

its too much closeness for my tastes... i need more personal space haha

yeah i thought the tables were conducive for communion and not conducive for worship... one of those things where we try things out and find out that it doesn't work so well... and then make some changes the next time around...

i would also agree that the band has had better days. it's not a big deal though... i wish i always preached my best message everytime i got up... but unfortunately... that's life...

i like reading your guys' input! if you feel comfortable doing it... you can comment on preaching too! boy, i'm gonna get it!

i really enjoyed the message and the sharing from this sunday, well... the parts that i heard.

the idea of a feast for communion was great. i wish i could've stayed longer.

maybe next time, we could have the tables in the back, and just have no seats during worship. sit on the floor! get up and dance!

tangent: is this the idea of an online community that you were talking about elton?

anyways, good idea, alright execution. we're still gonna test out the opensong program.

if anyone has any photos that they would like to share (hi-res), we can use them as the background image next time. :P email it to me at naythenjung@gmail.com

i'll add more when it comes to me.

Okay... if Serge and Christine wanna post still, that's cool, but here's my two cents:

I agree about the table thing. It was great for communion/feast, but it was tough for the music worship time. The only qualm I have is, I actually said in the beginning, "Don't feel tied to the table, move around, stand, kneel, dance, whatever... feel free to worship God however you need to."

And people did nothing. Seiko seemed to be having an awesome time of worship by herself in the back corner, too, not held back by anything...

Anyway, I disregarded it and continued doing my thing... I didn't want to overuse the "let's all rise" thing, but mostly I refrained from prodding our congregation because I felt that saying it once in the beginning was enough.

The end of the music worship time was a bit out of my control... it ended up sounding unplanned (which is not necessarily a bad thing) and not very solid (which is always a bad thing). I think we can do better.

I am normally good about disregarding mistakes and such, too, as it's part of where I come from as a perfectionist who has learned to be more about the heart instead. But Rory Noland did write in that book, "the Heart of an Artist" that excellence is not only more realistic and healthy, but demanded by God. The worship team has "had better days", but I don't want that to be an excuse not to work on our craft diligently. I don't want us riding our past triumphs... 'nuff said on that point.

Any other thoughts?

And about what Ken said, that "As for the songs, as much as I like Jars of Clay, it might have been a difficult song to sing."

You are right in the sense that it was a new song, and therefore difficult to follow along...

The melody is actually pretty catchy, but not according to the contemporary worship music we've been listening to, if that becomes the standard we adhere to. And now would be a good time to point out that it's not OUR standard. Church worship music has taken some funny courses through history... We'll talk more about that later.

I hope to do that song again, and then, ppl will know it better.

To be honest... I really don't have a strong opinion about whatever has been said... I guess I just don't want to think that the worship is a performance... i know a lot can be said in either direction to what i just said, but like i said, i don't have any strong opinion... if anything, we have to continue to cultivate a life of worship in our Haven family in which in all situations, we worship God, even if we don't know the words, we listen to the words and agree with them as worship to the Lord.
